Senator Cochran resigned effective April 1 because of health concerns. Governor Phil Bryant (R) appointed Mississippi Commissioner of Agriculture and Commerce Cindy Hyde-Smith (R) to fill the seat on March 21, 2018. There will be a special election on November 6, 2018. If no candidate receives a majority of the vote in this election, a runoff will take place on November 27, 2018. The winner of the special election will serve the remainder of Cochran's term until January 3, 2021.
